Dr APJ Abdul Kalam (15 October 1931 – 27 July 2015) remains one of India’s most admired scientists, educators, and statesmen. Popularly known as the “Missile Man of India,” he played a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s defence and space capabilities through his contributions to missile and aerospace programmes.Born into a humble family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr Kalam overcame financial hardships through determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to learning. After studying aerospace engineering, he began his career with India’s leading space and defence organisations, contributing significantly to satellite launch vehicles and strategic missile development. His leadership in programmes such as Agni and Prithvi earned him nationwide recognition. In 2002, Dr Kalam was elected as the 11th President of India, serving until 2007. Fondly called the “People’s President,” he was known for his simplicity, humility, and close interaction with students and young people. He believed that education, innovation, and scientific thinking were the keys to transforming India into a developed nation. Even after completing his presidential tenure, Dr Kalam devoted his life to teaching, writing, and motivating the youth. His books, including Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, and India 2020, continue to inspire millions to dream big and work towards nation-building.
On 27 July 2015, Dr Kalam passed away while delivering a lecture to students at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong a fitting reflection of his lifelong dedication to education. His passing marked the end of an extraordinary journey, but his ideals of integrity, knowledge, and service continue to guide generations.
